San Francsico: District 7

article slide

San Francisco's North District includes the neighborhoods of Cow Hollow, Marina, Pacific Heights and Presidio Heights.

Marina

The Marina district lies on what used to be the 635-acre site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Designed by Bernard Maybeck, The Palace of Fine Arts is one of a few remaining structures of the Expo, and one of the main tourist destinations in the Marina. A major housing development was built after the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge. The houses in the Marina were modestly built, lacking the architectural detail of the Victorians of the adjacent Pacific Heights neighborhood. Following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the Marina once again became a sought after neighborhood to live and work in. Chic restaurants, bars, and local shopping now help make the Marina a go-to destination for nightlife and entertainment. Union and Chestnut Street are noted as the best streets for luxurious shopping and exquisite dining.

Pacific Heights

Undoubtedly one of the most exclusive and sought after neighborhoods in all of San Francisco, Pacific Heights offers some of the most luxurious real estate in San Francisco and is home to several notable residents. Developed around 1870’s, the architectural styles of the homes vary from Victorians, Edwardian estates, and beautiful Chateau style homes with large lots. Built in 1853, the oldest residential home in San Francisco is located in this neighborhood. The C.A Belden House, which was built in 1889, is noted on the National Register of Historic Places and a classic example of Queen Anne style architecture. Perched upon a hill, the affectionately known “Pac Heights” neighborhood offers panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, The Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz and the San Francisco Bay. High-end shopping and dining can be found on Fillmore Street and Divisadero.
